The leaves surrounding the antheridial cluster are known as the perigonal leaves.

They are closely set and spread out in the form of a rosette to form a shallow cup-like structure which affords protection to the antheridia and also acts as a splash cup.

Associated with the antheridia in the cluster are numerous, green, sterile, hair-like filaments.

They are multicellular and upright with large capitate heads and are called the paraphyses.

Each paraphysis is usually 4 to 6 cells in height.
