Analytical Chemistry Question 73

Question: In fifth group, $ {{( NH_4 )}_2}CO_3 $ is added to precipitate out the carbonates. We do not add $ Na_2CO_3 $ because

[AIIMS 1982]

Options:

A) $ CaCO_3 $ is soluble in $ Na_2CO_3 $

B) $ Na_2CO_3 $ increases the solubility of fifth group carbonates

C) $ MgCO_3 $ will be precipitated out in fifth group

D) None of these

Show Answer

Answer:

Correct Answer: C

Solution:

As $ Na_2CO_3 $ is a strong electrolyte it will cause the precipitation of MgCO3. So (NH4)2CO3 is used as it’s a weaker electrolyte than $ Na_2CO_3. $
