Chemical Kinetics Question 42

Question: For the reaction $ A+B\to C $ , it is found that doubling the concentration of A increases the rate by 4 times, and doubling the concentration of B doubles the reaction rate. What is the overal order of the reaction. [KCET 2005]

Options:

A) 4

B) 3/2

C) 3

D) 1

Show Answer

Answer:

Correct Answer: C

Solution:

$ A+B\to C $ On doubling the concentration of $ A $ rate of reaction increases by four times. Rate $ \propto {{[A]}^{2}} $ However on doubling the concentration of $ B $ , rate of reaction increases two times. Rate $ \propto [B] $ Thus, overall order of reaction = 2 + 1= 3.
