Chemical Thermodynamics Question 358

Question: In an adiabatic process non-transfer of heat takes place between system and surroundings. Choose the correct option for free expansion of an ideal gas under adiabatic condition from the following.

Options:

A) $ q=0,\Delta T=0,w=0 $

B) $ q\ne 0,\Delta T=0,w=0 $

C) $ q=0,\Delta T,w=0 $

D) $ q=0,\Delta t<0,w\ne 0 $

Show Answer

Answer:

Correct Answer: A

Solution:

  • Free expansion $ w=0 $

adiabatic process $ q=0 $

$ \Delta U=q+w=0, $ this means internal energy remains constant.

$ \therefore $ $ \Delta t=0 $

In ideal gas there is no intermolecular attraction. Hence such a gas expands under adiabatic conditions into a vaccum no heat is absorbed or evolved since no external work is done to seperate the molecules.
