Hydrocarbons Question 304

Question: Which of the following will have least hindered rotation about carbon-carbon bond [IIT-JEE 1987; CPMT 1989, 94]

Options:

A) Ethane

B) Ethylene

C) Acetylene

D) Hexachloroethane

Show Answer

Answer:

Correct Answer: A

Solution:

Free rotation around carbon-carbon bond takes place easily in alkanes.

Now ethane and hexachloroethane both are alkanes.

But in hexachloroethane bulky chlorine atom hinders the rotation.

Therefore least hindered rotation takes place in ethane.
