Redox Reactions And Electrochemistry Question 31

Question: In a cell that utilises the reaction $ Z{n_{(s)}}+2{H^{+}}(aq)\to $ $ Z{n^{2+}}(aq)+{H_{ 2(g)}} $ addition of $ H_2SO_4 $ to cathode compartment, will [AIEEE 2004]

Options:

A) Increase the E and shift equilibrium to the right

B) Lower the E and shift equilibrium to the right

C) Lower the E and shift equilibrium to the left

D) Increase the E and shift equilibrium to the left

Show Answer

Answer:

Correct Answer: A

Solution:

$ Z{n_{(s)}}+2{H^{+}} _{(aq)} $ - $ Zn _{(aq)}^{2+}+{H _{2(g)}} $

$ E_{Cell}=E_{cell}^{0}-\frac{.059}{2}\log \frac{[Z{n^{2+}}]}{{{[{H^{+}}]}^{2}}} $

When $ H_2SO_4 $ is added then $ [{H^{+}}] $ will increase therefore $ E_{Cell} $ will also increases and equilibrium will shift towards right.
