Solutions Question 87

Question: Solute A is a ternary electrolyte and solute B is non-electrolyte. If 0.1 M solution of solute B produces an osmotic pressure of 2P, then 0.05 M solution of A at the same temperature will produce an osmotic pressure equal to:

Options:

A) P

B) 1.5P

C) IP

D) 3P

Show Answer

Answer:

Correct Answer: D

Solution:

For ternary electrolyte, i=3 $ P_1=iCRT=3\times 0.05\times RT $
$ P_1=0.15RT $ …(1)

For B, (non-electrolyte) $ P_2=CRT $ $ 2P=0.1RT $ …(2) Diving (1) and (2) $ \frac{P_1}{2P}=\frac{0.15}{0.1} $

$ \Rightarrow P_1=1.5\times 2P=3P $
