Question: The equation $ \frac{x^{2}}{2-r}+\frac{y^{2}}{r-5}+1=0 $ represents an ellipse, if

[MP PET 1995]

Options:

A) $ r>2 $

B) $ 2<r<5 $

C) $ r>5 $

D) None of these

Show Answer

Answer:

Correct Answer: B

Solution:

$ \frac{x^{2}}{2-r}+\frac{y^{2}}{r-5}+1=0 $

therefore $ \frac{x^{2}}{r-2}+\frac{y^{2}}{5-r}=1 $

Hence $ r>2 $ and $ r<5 $

therefore $ 2<r<5. $
