Straight Line Question 282

Question: The equation of the straight line which passes through the point (1, - 2) and cuts off equal intercepts from axes, is [MNR 1978]

Options:

A) $ x+y=1 $

B) $ x-y=1 $

C) $ x+y+1=0 $

D) $ x-y-2=0 $

Show Answer

Answer:

Correct Answer: C

Solution:

  • The equation of line which cuts off equal intercepts from axes a (say) is $ \frac{x}{a}+\frac{y}{a}=1 $ or $ x+y=a $ But it is passes through (1, -2), therefore $ 1-2=a $

$ \Rightarrow a=-1 $ . Hence the equation of straight line is $ x+y+1=0 $ .
