Trigonometric Identities Question 283

Question: What is the angle (in circular measure) between the hour hand and the minute hand of a clock when the time is half past 4?

Options:

A) $ \frac{\pi }{3} $

B) $ \frac{\pi }{4} $

C) $ \frac{\pi }{6} $

D) None of these

Show Answer

Answer:

Correct Answer: B

Solution:

Angle traced by the hour hand in 12 hours $ =360{}^\circ $ Angle traced by it in $ 4hr30\min ( 4h+\frac{30}{60}hr )=\frac{9}{2}hr $ $ =\frac{9}{2}\times \frac{360}{12}=135{}^\circ $ Angle traced by minute hand is $ 60{}^\circ \min =360{}^\circ $ Angle traced by it in $ 30\min =\frac{30}{60}\times 360=180{}^\circ $ Required Angle $ =180{}^\circ -135{}^\circ =45{}^\circ $
