Electrostatics Question 628

Question: All six capacitors shown are identical, Each can withstand maximum 200 volts between its terminals. The maximum voltage that can be safely applied between A and B is [MP PMT 2004]

Options:

A) 1200 V

B) 400 V

C) 800 V

D) 200 V

Show Answer

Answer:

Correct Answer: B

Solution:

Given circuit can be reduced as follows (C = capacitance of each capacitor).

the capacitor 3C, 3C can withstand maximum 200 V.

So maximum voltage that can be applied across A and B is equally shared. Hence maximum voltage applied across A and B is equally shared.

Hence max. voltage applied across A and B will be (200 + 200) = 400 volts.
