Electrostatics Question 633

Question: Three capacitors of capacitance 1 mF, 2 mF and 3 mF are connected in series and a potential difference of 11 V is applied across the combination. Then, the potential difference across the plates of 1 mF capacitor is [DCE 2003]

Options:

2 V

4 V

1 V

6 V

Show Answer

Answer:

Correct Answer: D

Solution:

Equivalent capacitance $ \frac{1}{C {eq}}=\frac{1}{C{1}}+\frac{1}{C_{2}}+\frac{1}{C_{3}} $

therefore $ C _{eq}=\frac{6}{11}\mu F $

Charge supplied from battery $ Q=\frac{6}{11}\times 11=6\mu C $

Hence potential difference across 1µF capacitor $ =\frac{6}{1}=6V $
