Kinematics Question 316

Question: For a body moving with relativistic speed, if the velocity is doubled, then [IIT JEE 2005]

Options:

A) it’s linear momentum is doubled

B) it’s linear momentum will be less than double

C) it’s linear momentum will be more than double

D) it’s linear momentum remains unchanged

Show Answer

Answer:

Correct Answer: C

Solution:

Relativistic momentum $ =\frac{m _{0}v}{\sqrt{1-v^{2}/c^{2}}} $ If velocity is doubled then the relativistic mass also increases. Thus value of linear momentum will be more than double.
