Magnetism Question 4

Question: Assertion : Magnetic moment of an atom is due to both, the orbital motion and spin motion of every electron. Reason : A charged particle produces a magnetic field.

Options:

A) If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion.

B) If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion.

C) If assertion is true but reason is false.

D) If the assertion and reason are both false.

E) If assertion is false but reason is true.

Answer:

Correct Answer: C

Solution:

In an atom, electrons revolve around the nucleus and as such the circular orbits of electrons may be considered as the small current loops. In addition to orbital motion, an electron has got spin motion also. So the total magnetic moment of electron is the vector sum of its magnetic moments due to orbital and spin motion. Charge particles at rest do not produce electric field.
