Magnetism Question 20

Assertion : The susceptibility of diamagnetic materials does not depend upon temperature. Reason : The atoms of a diamagnetic material do not have permanent magnetic moments.

Options:

A) If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion.

B) If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion.

C) If assertion is true but reason is false.

D) If the assertion and reason are both false.

E) If assertion is false but reason is true.

Show Answer

Answer:

Correct Answer: C

Solution:

Diamagnetism is non-cooperative behaviour of orbiting electrons when exposed to an applied magnetic field. Diamagnetic substances are composed of atoms which have no net magnetic moment (i.e., all the orbital shells are filled and there are no unpaired electrons). When exposed to a field, a negative magnetization is produced and thus the susceptibility is negative. Behaviour of diamagnetic material is that the susceptibility is temperature independent.
