Optics Question 203

Question: Yellow light is used in single slit diffraction experiment with slit width 0.6 mm. If yellow light is replaced by X-rays then the pattern will reveal

[IIT-JEE (Screening) 1999; MP PMT 2002; KCET 2003]

Options:

A) That the central maxima is narrower

B) No diffraction pattern

C) More number of fringes

D) Less number of fringes

Show Answer

Answer:

Correct Answer: B

Solution:

Diffraction is obtained when the slit width is of the order of wavelength of EM waves (or light). Here wavelength of X-rays $ (1-100{\AA}) $ is very-very lesser than slit width (0.6 mm).

Therefore no diffraction pattern will be observed.
