Optics Question 29

Assertion : A beam of white light gives a spectrum on passing through a hollow prism. Reason : Speed of light inside the prism is different from the speed of light outside the prism.

Options:

A) If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion.

B) If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion.

C) If assertion is true but reason is false.

D) If the assertion and reason are both false.

E) If assertion is false but reason is true.

Show Answer

Answer:

Correct Answer: D

Solution:

Dispersion of light cannot occur on passing through air contained in a hollow prism.

Dispersion takes place because the refractive index of the medium for different colours is different.

Therefore when white light travels from air to air, refractive index remains the same and no dispersion occurs.
