wave_mechanics interference_and_superposition_of_waves Question 16

Question: The displacement of a particle is given by $ x=3\sin (5\pi t)+4\cos (5\pi t) $ The amplitude of the particle is

[MP PMT 1999]

Options:

A) 3

B) 4

C) 5

D) 7

Show Answer

Answer:

Correct Answer: C

Solution:

For the given super imposing waves $ a _{1}=3, $

$ a _{2}=4 $ and phase difference $ \varphi =\frac{\pi }{2} $

Therefore $ A=\sqrt{a _{1}^{2}+a _{2}^{2}+2a _{1}a _{2}\cos \pi /2}=\sqrt{{{(3)}^{2}}+{{(4)}^{2}}}=5 $
