Rotational Motion Question 3

Question: A solid sphere, a hollow sphere and a ring are released from top of an inclined plane (frictionless) so that they slide down the plane. Then, maximum acceleration down the plane is for (no rolling)

[AIEEE 2002]

Options:

A) solid sphere

B) hollow sphere

C) ring

D) All same

Show Answer

Answer:

Correct Answer: D

Solution:

  • [d] For rolling of a body, friction is necessary.

The friction depends on mass of the body.

It opposes the action of sliding down of a body for all the bodies the acceleration is $ \alpha \sin \theta $ and is independent of masses.

In this question, the inclined plane is frictionless, then there will be no rolling and the mass will only slide down. Here, acceleration is same for all the given bodies.
