Thermodynamics Question 254

An ideal gas is initially at $ P _{1} $ , $ V _{1} $ is expanded to $ P _{2} $ , $ V _{2} $ and then compressed adiabatically to the same volume and pressure $ P _{3} $ If W is the net work done by the gas in complete process which of the following is true?

Options:

A) $ W>0;P _{3}>P _{1} $

B) $ W<0;P _{3}<P _{1} $

C) $ W>0;P _{3}<P _{1} $

D) $ W<0;P _{3}<P _{1} $

Show Answer

Answer:

Correct Answer: B

Solution:

In the first process W is +ve as $ \Delta V $ is positive, in the second process W is -ve as $ \Delta V $ is negative and area under the curve of second process is more

$ \therefore $ Net Work $ <0 $ and also$ P _{3}>P _{1}. $
