Transmission Of Heat Question 266

Question: If the temperature of the sun becomes twice its present temperature, then

[MP PET 1989; RPMT 1996]

Options:

A) Radiated energy would be predominantly in infrared

B) Radiated energy would be predominantly in ultraviolet

C) Radiated energy would be predominantly in X-ray region

D) Radiated energy would become twice the present radiated energy

Show Answer

Answer:

Correct Answer: B

Solution:

The wavelength corresponding to maximum emission of radiation from the sun is $ {\lambda _{\max }}=4753{\AA} $ (close to the wavelength of violet colour of visible region). Hence if temperature is doubled lm is decreased $ ( {\lambda _{m}}\propto \frac{1}{T} ) $ i.e. mostly ultraviolet radiations emits.
