Enzymes achieve substrate specificity through the precise complementary fit between their active site and the substrate. Two models, the “lock-and-key” and “induced-fit” models, describe this interaction. In the lock-and-key model, the active site’s shape perfectly matches the substrate. In the induced-fit model, the active site undergoes conformational changes upon substrate binding to achieve a better fit.
