How does the autonomic nervous system (ANS) function, and what are its divisions?

Answer:

The ANS regulates involuntary physiological processes such as heart rate and digestion. It has two divisions: sympathetic (fight-or-flight) and parasympathetic (rest-and-digest), which often have opposing effects to maintain balance.
