Exemplar Problems

Question:

Compare and contrast aerobic respiration and anaerobic respiration, highlighting their differences in terms of oxygen requirement and ATP production.

Answer:

  • Aerobic respiration requires oxygen and takes place in the presence of oxygen. It yields a large amount of ATP (up to 38 ATP) and involves glycolysis, the Krebs cycle, and the electron transport chain.

  • Anaerobic respiration occurs in the absence or limited supply of oxygen. It produces fewer ATP molecules than aerobic respiration and typically involves glycolysis and alternative electron acceptors. Examples include lactic acid fermentation and alcoholic fermentation.
