Question:

What is spermatogenesis? Briefly describe the process of spermatogenesis.

Answer:

Spermatogenesis is the process of sperm cell development in the testes. It begins with spermatogonia, which are diploid stem cells. These cells undergo mitotic division, producing primary spermatocytes, which then undergo meiosis I to form secondary spermatocytes. The secondary spermatocytes further undergo meiosis II to produce spermatids, haploid cells. Finally, spermatids undergo a series of morphological changes during spermiogenesis to become mature spermatozoa (sperm cells).
