Problem 19 : Discuss the concept of hybridization in organic chemistry. Determine the hybridization of the carbon atom in methane (CH₄), ethene (C₂H₄), and ethyne (C₂H₂).
Solution :
The hybridization of the central carbon atom in methane (CH₄) is sp³. In ethene (C₂H₄), it’s sp², and in ethyne (C₂H₂), it’s sp.
