Exemplar Problems

Problem 3 : Explain the formation of an ionic bond in sodium chloride (NaCl). Use Lewis dot structures to represent the transfer of electrons between sodium and chlorine.
Solution :

EThe formation of an ionic bond in NaCl involves the transfer of electrons from sodium (Na) to chlorine (Cl). Sodium donates its valence electron to chlorine, forming Na⁺ and Cl⁻ ions. The electrostatic attraction between the oppositely charged ions (Na⁺ and Cl⁻) results in the formation of the ionic compound NaCl.
