Problem 5 : Explain the concept of resonance in chemical bonding. Provide an example of a molecule with resonance structures.
Solution :
Resonance in chemical bonding occurs when multiple valid Lewis structures can be drawn for a molecule or ion. It implies that the actual electronic structure is a combination of the resonance structures. For example, ozone (O₃) has two resonance structures, and the actual structure is a hybrid of these resonance structures with partial double bonds between the oxygen atoms.
