Problem 1 : Calculate the pH of a solution formed by mixing 50 mL of 0.1 M (HCl) and 50 mL of 0.1 M (NaOH).
Solution :
To find the pH of the solution, we need to consider the reaction between (HCl) and (NaOH):
(HCl) (aq) + (NaOH) (aq) → (NaCl) (aq) + (H_2O) (l)
Since (HCl) is a strong acid and (NaOH) is a strong base, they will completely neutralize each other to form (NaCl) and water H2O. There won’t be any H+ or OH- ions left in the solution. Therefore, the pH of the resulting solution will be 7 (neutral).
