Problem 1: Basic Wave Parameters
Problem Statement: A wave is traveling along a rope. The wave has a wavelength of 2 meters, a frequency of 5 Hz, and an amplitude of 0.5 meters. Calculate the speed of the wave and its period.
Solution :
Wave Speed: The speed of a wave is given by $$( v = f \lambda ),$$ where ƒ is the frequency and λ is the wavelength. Substituting the given values, $$( v = 5 , \text{Hz} \times 2 , \text{m} = 10 , \text{m/s} ).$$ Period: The period T is the reciprocal of the frequency, $$( T = \frac{1}{f} ). Thus, ( T = \frac{1}{5} , \text{s} = 0.2 , \text{s} )$$
