Atomic Structure - Result Question 76

Match the Columns

The wave function, $\psi_n, l, m_l$ is a mathematical function whose value depends upon spherical polar coordinates $(r, \theta, \phi)$ of the electron and characterised by the quantum number $n, l$ and $m_l$. Here $r$ is distance from nucleus, $\theta$ is colatitude and $\phi$ is azimuth. In the mathematical functions given in the Table, $Z$ is atomic number and $a_0$ is Bohr radius.

52. For $He^{+}$ion, the only INCORRECT combination is

(a) (I) (i) (S)

(b) (II) (ii) (Q)

(c) (I) (iii) (R)

(d) (I) (i) (R)

Show Answer

Answer:

Correct Answer: 52. (c)

Solution:

  1. In the wave function $(\psi)$ expression for $1 s$-orbital of $He^{+}$, there should be no angular part. Hence (iii) can’t be true for $\psi _{1 s}$ of $He^{+}$.
