Nuclear Chemistry - Result Question 14

Assertion and Reason

Read the following questions and answer as per the direction given below:

(a) Statement I is true; Statement II is true; Statement II is the correct explanation of Statement I

(b) Statement I is true; Statement II is true; Statement II is not the correct explanation of Statement I

(c) Statement I is true; Statement II is false

(d) Statement I is false; Statement II is true

14.

Statement I Nuclide ${ } _{13}^{30} Al$ is less stable than ${ } _{20}^{40} Ca$.

Statement II Nuclides having odd number of protons and neutrons are generally unstable.

Answer:

Correct Answer: 14. $(b)$

Solution:

  1. Upto atomic number of 20 , stable nuclei possess neutron to proton ratio $(n / p)=1$.

$ \begin{aligned} & \frac{n}{p}\left({ } _{13} Al^{30}\right)=\frac{17}{13}=1.3>1, \text { unstable, } \beta \text {-emitters. } \\ & \frac{n}{p}\left({ } _{20} Ca^{40}\right)=\frac{20}{20}=1, \text { stable. } \end{aligned} $

Also, nuclei with both neutrons and protons odd are usually unstable but it does not explain the assertion appropriately.
