p-Block Elements-I - Result Question 13-1

13. Which one of the following oxides is neutral ?

(1996, 1M)

(a) $CO$

(b) $\mathrm{SnO}_2$

(c) $ZnO$

(d) $\mathrm{SiO}_2$

Show Answer

Answer:

Correct Answer: 13. (a)

Solution:

  1. Carbon monoxide is a neutral oxide, all others are amphoteric :

$ \begin{aligned} \mathrm{SnO}_2+4 \mathrm{HCl} & \longrightarrow \mathrm{SnCl}_4+2 \mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O} \\ \mathrm{ZnO}+2 \mathrm{HCl} & \longrightarrow \mathrm{ZnCl}_2+\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O} \\ \mathrm{SiO}_2+2 \mathrm{NaOH} & \longrightarrow \mathrm{Na}_2 \mathrm{SiO}_3+\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O} \end{aligned} $

$\mathrm{SnO}_2$ and $ZnO$ also react with $\mathrm{NaOH} . \mathrm{SiO}_2$ is also attacked by $\mathrm{H}_3 \mathrm{PO}_4$.
