pBlock ElementsII - Result Question 127

The product formed in the reaction of $SOCl_2$ with white phosphorus is

(2014 Adv.)

(a) $PCl _3$

(b) $SO _2 Cl _2$

(c) $SCl_2$

(d) $POCl _3$

Show Answer

Solution:

  1. PLAN This problem is based on chemical properties of phosphorus.

White phosphorus on reaction with thionyl chloride $\left(SOCl _2\right)$ produces phosphorus trichloride.

$P _4(s)+8 SOCl _2(l) \longrightarrow 4 PCl _3(l)+4 SO _2(g)+2 S _2 Cl _2(g)$

But if the amount of thionyl chloride $\left(SOCl_2\right)$ is in excess, it produces phosphorus trichloride.

$P _4+10 SOCl _2(l) \longrightarrow 4 PCl _5+10 SO _2$
