Key Idea The percentage composition of a compound is given by the formula.

$%$ composition $=[$ Composition of a substance in a compound $/$ Total composition total of compound $] \times 100$

In $CH _4$,

mole of carbon $=1$

mole of hydrogen $=4$

$\therefore$ % of carbon by mole in $CH _4=\frac{1}{1+4} \times 100=20 $%
