States of Matter - Result Question 31

31. The density of neon will be highest at

(1990,1 M)

(a) STP

(b) $0^{\circ} C, 2 \hspace {1mm} atm$

(c) $273^{\circ} C, 1 \hspace {1mm} atm$

(d) $273^{\circ} C, 2 \hspace {1mm} atm$

Show Answer

Answer:

Correct Answer: 31. (b)

Solution:

The ideal gas equation, $p V=n R T=\dfrac{w}{M} R T$

$\Rightarrow p M =\left(\dfrac{w}{V}\right) R T=d R T \quad(d=\text { density }) $

$\Rightarrow d =\dfrac{p M}{R T}$

i.e. density will be greater at low temperature and high pressure.
