Rotation Ques 106

A triangular plate of uniform thickness and density is made to rotate about an axis perpendicular to the plane of the paper and (a) passing through $A$, (b) passing through $B$, by the application of the same force, $F$, at $C$ (mid-point of $A B$ ) as shown in the figure. The angular acceleration in both the cases will not be the same.

Answer:

Correct Answer: 106.F

Solution:

  1. $\alpha=\frac{\tau}{I}$

$\tau=F \times r _{\perp}$ : Torque is same in both the cases but moment of inertia depends on distribution of mass from the axis. Distribution of mass in both the cases is different. Therefore, moment of inertia will be different or the angular acceleration $\alpha$ will be different.
