Chemical Bonding And Molecular Structure Question 1

Question 1 - 2024 (01 Feb Shift 1)

Assertion (A) : $PH_3$ has lower boiling point than $NH_3$. Reason (R) : In liquid state $NH_3$ molecules are associated through hydrogen bonding, but $PH_3$ molecules are associated through vander waal’s forces.

(1) Both (A) and (R) are correct and (R) is not the correct explanation of (A)

(2) (A) is incorrect but (R) is correct

(3) Both (A) and (R) are correct but (R) is the correct explanation of (A)

(4) (A) is correct but (R) is incorrect

Show Answer

Answer (4)

Solution

Unlike $NH _3, PH _3$ molecules are not associated through hydrogen bonding in liquid state. That is why the boiling point of $PH _3$ is lower than $NH _3$.
