Question 14 - 2020 (02 Sep Shift 2)

Two compounds A and B with same molecular formula ($\text{C}_3\text{H}_6\text{O}$) undergo Grignard’s reaction with methyl-magnesium bromide to give products C and D. Products C and D show following chemical tests.

C and D respectively are:

(1) $\text{C} = \text{H}_3\text{C}-\text{CH}_2-\text{CH}-\text{CH}_3$ (with OH); $\text{D} = \text{H}_3\text{C}-\text{C}(\text{CH}_3)_2-\text{OH}$

(2) $\text{C} = \text{H}_3\text{C}-\text{CH}_2-\text{CH}_2-\text{OH}$; $\text{D} = \text{H}_3\text{C}-\text{CH}_2-\text{CH}-\text{CH}_3$ (with OH)

(3) $\text{C} = \text{H}_3\text{C}-\text{CH}_2-\text{CH}_2-\text{CH}_2-\text{OH}$; $\text{D} = \text{H}_3\text{C}-\text{C}(\text{CH}_3)_2-\text{OH}$
