JEE PYQ: Aldehydes And Ketones Question 31
Question 31 - 2019 (10 Apr Shift 2)
A (C$8$H${10}$O): iodoform positive. KMnO$_4$/KOH gives B (C$_8$H$_6$O$_4$) whose anhydride makes phenolphthalein. A is:
(1). ($p$-cresyl methyl ether)
(2). (Phenylacetaldehyde)
(3). ($o$-methylacetophenone)
(4). ($o$-ethylphenol or related compound giving phthalic acid)
Show Answer
Answer: (4)
Solution
B = phthalic acid (anhydride used for phenolphthalein). A has COCH$_3$ (iodoform) and adjacent CH$_3$ which both oxidize to COOH.
