JEE PYQ: Aromatic Compounds Question 12

Question 12 - 2020 (08 Jan Shift 2)

In the following sequence: A $\xrightarrow{\text{Red hot Cu tube}}$ B $\xrightarrow{\text{CH}_3\text{Cl/AlCl}_3}$ C (A is lowest MW alkyne)

The maximum number of atoms present in molecule ‘C’ in one plane is:

Show Answer

Answer: 13

Solution

A = acetylene → B = benzene (trimerization) → C = toluene. In toluene, 13 atoms lie in one plane (6C of ring + 5H on ring + 1C of $\text{CH}_3$ + 1H of $\text{CH}_3$).
