o-Cresol (2-methylphenol) $\xrightarrow{(i) \text{aq. NaOH}; (ii) \text{CH}_3\text{I}}$ major product:
(1) 2,6-Dimethylphenol
(2) 2-Methylanisole
(3) C-alkylated product
(4) Disubstituted product
NaOH forms phenoxide, then $\text{CH}_3\text{I}$ gives O-alkylation (Williamson ether synthesis) → 2-methylanisole.
