Compound(s) which will liberate carbon dioxide with sodium bicarbonate solution is/are:

A = aminophenol, B = benzoic acid ($\text{C}_6\text{H}_5\text{COOH}$), C = 2,4-dinitrophenol

(1) B and C only

(2) B only

(4) C only

Show Answer

Answer: (1)

Solution

Compounds more acidic than $\text{H}_2\text{CO}_3$ give $\text{CO}_2$ on reaction with $\text{NaHCO}_3$. Benzoic acid and 2,4-dinitrophenol (picric acid) are both more acidic than $\text{H}_2\text{CO}_3$.
