Which of the following statements is correct?

(1) Gluconic acid can form cyclic (acetal/hemiacetal) structure

(2) Gluconic acid is a dicarboxylic acid

(3) Gluconic acid is a partial oxidation product of glucose

(4) Gluconic acid is obtained by oxidation of glucose with $\text{HNO}_3$

Answer: (3)

Solution

Gluconic acid is obtained by partial oxidation of glucose by mild oxidising agent e.g. Tollen’s reagent, Fehling solution, $\text{Br}_2$ water. Gluconic acid can not form hemiacetal or acetal.
