JEE PYQ: Biomolecules And Polymers Question 39
Question 39 - 2019 (09 Apr Shift 1)
The major product of the following reaction is:
p-Cl-C$_6$H$_4$-CH$_2$CH=CH$_2$ $\xrightarrow{(1) \text{ KOH (alc.)}}$ $\xrightarrow{(2) \text{ Free radical polymerisation}}$
(1) Polymer with phenol-OH group
(2) Polymer with $\text{CH}_3$ on phenyl ring
(3) Polymer with Cl on chain
(4) Polymer with $\text{CH}_3$ group on phenyl, Cl on chain
Show Answer
Answer: (4)
Solution
Alc. KOH eliminates HCl from the allylic chloride to form a styrene derivative. Free radical polymerisation of the resulting monomer gives polystyrene derivative with $\text{CH}_3$ on the phenyl ring.
