JEE PYQ: Biomolecules And Polymers Question 43
Question 43 - 2019 (10 Apr Shift 1)
Amylopectin is composed of:
(1) $\alpha$-D-glucose, $\text{C}_1 - \text{C}_4$ and $\text{C}_1 - \text{C}_6$ linkages
(2) $\beta$-D-glucose, $\text{C}_1 - \text{C}_4$ and $\text{C}_2 - \text{C}_6$ linkages
(3) $\beta$-D-glucose, $\text{C}_1 - \text{C}_4$ and $\text{C}_1 - \text{C}_6$ linkages
(4) $\alpha$-D-glucose, $\text{C}_1 - \text{C}_4$ and $\text{C}_2 - \text{C}_6$ linkages
Show Answer
Answer: (1)
Solution
Starch is a polymer of $\alpha$-D-glucose. It has two components. (i) Amylose which has only $\alpha$-1,4-glycosidic linkage and is a linear polymer. (ii) Amylopectin which has $\alpha$-1,4-glycosidic linkage in addition to $\alpha$-1,6-glycosidic linkage and is a cross-linked polymer.
