JEE PYQ: Biomolecules And Polymers Question 51

Question 51 - 2019 (09 Jan Shift 1)

Major product of the following reaction is:

[Methacryloyl chloride + $\text{H}_2\text{N}-\text{CH}_2\text{CH}_2\text{CONH}_2$ $\xrightarrow{(1) \text{Et}_3\text{N}}$ $\xrightarrow{(2) \text{Free radical polymerisation}}$]

(1) Polyamide with pendant amide group

(2) Polyamide with pendant chloride

(3) Polyamide with cyclic imide

(4) Polyamide with different connectivity

Show Answer

Answer: (4)

Solution

The methacryloyl chloride reacts with the amine via $\text{Et}_3\text{N}$ to form an amide linkage, then free radical polymerisation occurs through the vinyl group.
