JEE PYQ: Coordination Compounds Question 17

Question 17 - 2020 (02 Sep Shift 2)

The one that is not expected to show isomerism is:

(a) $[\text{Ni(NH}_3)_4(\text{H}_2\text{O})_2]^{2+}$ (b) $[\text{Ni(en)}_3]^{2+}$ (c) $[\text{Ni(NH}_3)_2\text{Cl}_2]$ (d) $[\text{Pt(NH}_3)_2\text{Cl}_2]$

Show Answer

Answer: (c)

Solution

$[\text{Ni(NH}_3)_2\text{Cl}_2]$: Ni$^{2+} = 3d^8 4s^0 \Rightarrow sp^3$ hybridisation = tetrahedral. Tetrahedral complexes of the type $[\text{MA}_2\text{B}_2]$ do not show geometrical isomerism.
