JEE PYQ: Coordination Compounds Question 19

Question 19 - 2020 (03 Sep Shift 1)

The complex that can show optical activity is:

(a) $trans$-$[\text{Cr(Cl}_2)(\text{ox})_2]^{3-}$ (b) $trans$-$[\text{Fe(NH}_3)_2(\text{CN})_4]^-$ (c) $cis$-$[\text{Fe(NH}_3)_2(\text{CN})_4]^-$ (d) $cis$-$[\text{CrCl}_2(\text{ox})_2]^{3-}$ (ox = oxalate)

Show Answer

Answer: (d)

Solution

Only $cis$-$[\text{CrCl}_2(\text{ox})_2]^{3-}$ shows optical isomerism; its trans form has a plane of symmetry and is optically inactive.
