JEE PYQ: Electrochemistry Question 20

Question 20 - 2020 (06 Sep Shift 2)

For the given cell: $\text{Cu}(s)|\text{Cu}^{2+}(C_1\text{M})||\text{Cu}^{2+}(C_2\text{M})|\text{Cu}(s)$ change in Gibbs energy ($\Delta G$) is negative, if:

(1) $C_1 = C_2$

(2) $C_2 = \frac{C_1}{\sqrt{2}}$

(3) $C_1 = 2C_2$

(4) $C_2 = \sqrt{2}C_1$

Show Answer

Answer: (4) $C_2 = \sqrt{2}C_1$

Solution

For $\Delta G < 0$, $E_{\text{cell}} > 0$, which requires $C_2 > C_1$. Only option (4) satisfies this.
